Cristiano Ronaldo to miss England friendly but ‘fit for Euro 2016’

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo said he will not play against England on Thursday and admitted he needs a rest before joining the Portugal squad for Euro 2016 but he said he will be ready for that despite finishing the season with fitness concerns.
Ronaldo scored the decisive penalty in Milan as Real Madrid won their 11th European Cup by beating Atlético in a shootout and the club’s president, Florentino Pérez, said he wanted the forward to play for the club until the end of his career.

Ronaldo, who had said before the final he still felt “like a kid” at 31, is determined to keep his career going for as long as possible. Asked if he would be playing against England, he said: “No, come on! Let me rest my legs. Now is the time to rest and enjoy this moment. I [then] have six days to be prepared to play a good competition [at Euro 2016].
“[I am] very tired. I have [played] more than 4,000 minutes this season. I was the No1 in the team again for most minutes [played]. That means a lot to me: it means I am still good. I still feel good physically, mentally. If you ask me if I feel tired tonight, of course. [I have] a lot of minutes in the legs but I am still there; I am always there.

“I showed the team I am there for the good moments and the bad moments. This is what makes me feel proud.”
England face Portugal at Wembley on Thursday in their last friendly before Euro 2016 begins in France. Roy Hodgson must submit his final 23-man squad to Uefa by Tuesday evening, with two of the 25 left set to miss out.
Portugal will face Estonia in their last warm-up match on 8 June and Ronaldo believes the later date for the Champions League final has him at a disadvantage.
“The break, 15 days, is a lot. I hope next year, or the coming years, they [hold the Champions League final] closer to the end of the league season,” he said. “Fifteen days to prepare for the Champions League at the end of the season is a lot. As you see on the pitch, everybody was tired and feel cramp in the legs – and it was very hot.
“I have scored more than 50 goals [every season] for seven years but I am always asking for more,” Ronaldo added, holding his hand up near his head. “I am always at the top level, up here. I still feel good. I still feel fresh – not tonight – and I want to carry on like that. I feel good and I love to play for Real Madrid. I want to carry on.”

Cristiano Ronaldo plays down injury fears ahead of Champions League final

Cristiano Ronaldo says the injury he suffered is just a 'knock'
Cristiano Ronaldo says the injury he suffered is just a 'knock'
Cristiano Ronaldo has played down fears over his fitness ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League final against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
The three-time Ballon d'Or winner was forced to leave Real's training session on Tuesday, which was part of an open media day, after competing for a ball with reserve goalkeeper Kiko Casilla and collapsing to the floor.
Several members of Real Madrid's medical staff helped to pick the star forward up off the floor, and the Portugal international was able to hobble off the pitch unassisted.

Cristiano Ronaldo got injured whilst training for Real Madrid, but will he be fit for their Champions League final against Atletico Madrid?
Ronaldo left the session with training still in progress, and was seen to throw a water bottle away in anger as he headed for the changing rooms.
But speaking after the training session, Ronaldo insisted his limp was nothing more than the result of a dead leg.

"I am fine. I had a little problem in training, a dead leg as they say here, but tomorrow [Wednesday] or the next day I will be fine. It was a minor scare, a knock," he said.
Ronaldo came off at half-time of Real Madrid's final game of the La Liga season at Deportivo La Coruna 10 days ago having scored twice in the first half to take his tally for the season to 51.
He then sat out a practice match on Saturday ahead of this weekend's showdown with city rivals Atletico at the San Siro in Milan.

Prior to this latest injury scare, coach Zinedine Zidane said Ronaldo would be fit for the Champions League final, despite a persistent thigh problem.
And Ronaldo also thinks he is in better physical condition than he was before the final two years ago when Real beat Atletico 4-1 after extra time in Lisbon.
"I believe I'm in better shape," he said. "I've had a slight problem but it's normal as I have been the most used player in the team.
"I think this is the season where I have played the most minutes. Besides the problem of today's training session, I believe I'm at my best level."

Real are already without defender Raphael Varane for the final due to a thigh problem.
"The only major drawback, and that really is very serious, is Varane," said Zidane. "He is now out for Saturday. He may not be ready in two or three weeks. It is less serious than we thought. He will travel but will not play on Saturday.
"With regard to the selection I hope he can play the Euros. It's a blow for him and I'm worried about him."

Nigerians want change in their pocket- Amaechi

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, says Nigerians have become impatient about this present administration's change agenda as they desire to see change in their pockets and not just in structures. Speaking at a forum organised by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja yesterday May 24th, ‎Amaechi said the present government met a bad structure in governance and is trying to correct it. He says they will need at least $55.9 billion to develop infrastructure in the transportation sector...

“We didn’t anticipate that things were this bad. We thought you go to government and there would be money for you to run government and others. Now you have the situation where there is no money to run government. I hate to use the word difficult; I hate to use the word impossible but we met things close to difficult and impossibility. That is why Nigerians are impatient; they want to see results and for them, change is not about change in structure, it is about change in their pocket. Because their pocket is getting dried and they wanted us to put some more resources in their pocket. What I usually say to people is that we beg you to give us time; we will achieve our objective if you give us time and we will both thank God for that opportunity. We need over 50.9 billion dollars in the next five years to develop infrastructure and 50 billion dollars is not a joke. One of the infrastructure we are trying to develop is the railway infrastructure; the president has kindly agreed that he will fund it because the contract was awarded by Obasanjo, the former president; he awarded the contract for Lagos to Kano. President Jonathan awarded the contract for Lagos to Calabar, what the president has agreed to do is to fund it; he said can we fund the ones we have already awarded; no more awards until we have developed the ones we have awarded. So we are focusing on the Lagos to Kano railway and the Lagos to Calabar rail line. If you look at the communities surrounding this rail line; Lagos to Kano will start from Lagos to Ibadan; it will impact on so many sectors of the economy including housing; people who ordinarily will not be able to pay for house rent in Lagos can live in Ibadan, can live in Ogun and come to work in Lagos.”he said

The real reason Tamar Braxton got fired from The Real!

This is one of the most talked about issue in the US right now. Singer Tamar Braxton has been fired from day-time talk show The Real which was confirmed on Sunday. New details have now leaked on the many reasons Tamar got fired. Read after the cut..

From The Daily Mail
....during the final tapings of The Real in early May, the show's executive producer had reached a breaking point with Tamar, who cursed her out in earshot of other staffers on set after being upset she lost a game during the taping.
'It was an ugly scene. Pinterest was sponsoring the segment and Tamar was genuinely upset she was losing the game. 'She really acted out during the taping in front of the studio audience and then exploded behind the scenes once the show was done.
Producers had to heavily edit the segment to make it presentable to air on TV, but the sponsor was on set for the segment and witnessed it all,' the source explains.
...Sources tell Daily Mail Online Telepictures decided to conduct focus groups on the show to see what they could do to empower the show for Seasons 3 and 4, as it had been announced that the series had received a two-year renewal on all Fox stations and on BET where it re-airs.
The research from the focus group was not good for Tamar.
'The focus group research showed that most educated and working women did not identify with Tamar's show vernacular and her use of words known to be popular among drag queens and some gay men - phrases like "get your life," "where they do that at," "have several seats."
'It was even said she seemed more suited to be a judge on RuPaul's Drag Race on Logo instead of a talk show host on The Real,' revealed the source.
'The research went on to say that most educated and working women found her to be 'ghetto' and that her aggressive eye-rolling, neck-rolling and the smacking of her mouth were indicative of 'stereotypical behavior that African American women have worked years to overcome,'' the source continued.
The Real's executive producer used the show's focus group findings, her on-set insubordination and the fact that the sales team for the show had made it clear that advertisers did not want her in their segments due to antics that happened with Pinterest to convince Warner Bros. to can her from the show.
The Real co-host Loni Love released a video taped messaged regarding Tamar Braxton's surprise firing from the show...

Emir of Kano says it's time to stop child marriage in Nigeria

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II says its time to peg marriage age in Nigeria. Speaking at a conference of Northern Muslims Religious Leaders Forum on Primary Health care in Kano yesterday May 24th, Sanusi spoke strongly against child marriage. According to him, the health challenge faced when a girl is exposed to child marriage is enough reason to discontinue the practice.

"I believe the time is ripe to take a stand on this age long practice of early marriage, and coincidentally we subscribed to Malikiyya school of thought like Morocco, Malaysia and Egypt who had since pegged marriage age to 17, 19 and 18 respectively”. Sanusi added that the role of a woman as a housewife are numerous and highly demanding and hence a girl should be allowed to have attained some level of maturity before she is married off. On domestic violence in marriages, Sanusi said it was not Islamic for men to hit their wives. He added that he had already told his daughters to retaliate if they experience such “I don’t expect my in-law to lay his hand on my daughter, but I have since urged her to retaliate any form of assault from her husband”.

'Nigeria Faces Recession Risk as GDP Shrinks in First Quarter' - Bloomberg report

A report on international business news website, Bloomberg, claims Nigeria is faced with possible recession as the Nation's GDP shrinked in the first quarter of this year. Read the report below...
"Nigeria’s economy risks falling into recession after it shrank in the first quarter as oil output slumped and the manufacturing, financial and real estate industries declined. Gross domestic product in Africa’s largest economy contracted by 0.36 percent from a year earlier, the Abuja-based National Bureau of Statistics said in an e-mailed statement on Friday.
This compares with growth of 2.11 percent in the previous three months. The median of 17 economist estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for growth of 1.8 percent. The last time the economy contracted was the second quarter of 2004, according to data on the central bank’s website. Falling prices of crude, from which Nigeria derives up to 70 percent of state revenues, have caused the nation’s economic outlook to deteriorate as the government struggles to pay salaries and stimulate growth, forcing it to increase borrowing.

President Muhammadu Buhari on May 6 signed a record budget of 6.1 trillion naira ($30.6 billion) with a deficit of 2.2 trillion, or 2.14 percent of GDP. Buhari has resisted calls from investors to devalue the naira, which has been pegged at 197-199 per dollar for more than a year. Foreign-exchange trading restrictions and import curbs have led to shortages of goods from gasoline to milk and contributed to the contraction in factory output in the quarter.

“It’s inevitable that we’ll go into recession,” Pabina Yinkere, an analyst at Vetiva Capital Management Ltd. and the only contributor to Bloomberg’s survey who predicted a contraction, said by phone from Lagos on Friday.

"I expect the second quarter to be even worse.” Nigeria’s economic slowdown is exacerbated by the re-emergence of an insurgency in the key oil-producing Niger River delta region. Militants have damaged facilities owned by companies including Chevron Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell Plc, causing output to drop to a 27-year low. While oil output fell to 2.11 million barrels a day in the first quarter, from 2.18 million a year earlier, according to the statistics office, Emmanuel Kachikwu, the nation’s minister for petroleum resources, said last week production has slumped to 1.4 million barrels a day due to the attacks. Oil contributed 10.3 percent to GDP in the quarter through March, according to the statistics office.

“It is now likely that Nigeria’s economy will contract over the year as a whole,” John Ashbourne, a London-based Africa economist at Capital Economics Ltd., said in an e-mailed note to clients. “We have long warned of a slow-burning crisis in Nigeria. It now seems that this view was too optimistic: the country is headed into a full-blown crisis.”

Fuel Shortages Nigeria, one of Africa’s biggest oil producers, has been crippled by fuel shortages which the statistics office blamed for an 8 percent drop in labor productivity in the fourth quarter. The nation imports at least 70 percent of refined fuel because it lacks sufficient refining capacity. Unemployment rose to 12.1 percent in the first quarter from 10.4 percent in the previous three months, the statistics office said in a separate report.

“We have one more month to evade a recession, and that’s just not going to happen. Let’s not fool ourselves,” Bismarck Rewane, chief executive officer of Lagos-based consultancy Financial Derivatives Co., said by phone. “We’ve had strikes, petrol queues, and disruption of oil production, all showing we’re headed to another negative quarter.”

The government last week announced a 67 percent increase in the price of gasoline hoping it will ease fuel shortages, even as it adds to inflation pressures.

The inflation rate climbed to an almost six-year high of 13.7 percent in April, driven by the increasing cost of fuel. Only two of 20 economists in a Bloomberg survey forecast the central bank, which tightened policy by a full percentage point in March, will leave its benchmark rate unchanged at 12 percent on May 24, while the rest predict increases of between 50 basis points and 250 basis points.

The contraction “shows that Nigerians and particularly the central bank should now reconsider the tightening stance they have embarked upon,” Ayo Teriba, chief executive officer of Economic Associates Ltd., an advisory firm, said by phone from Lagos.

Okonjo-Iweala reacts to reports that a court ordered her & others to account for missing N30trn

Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has reacted to reports that went round last week that a court asked her to account for N30 trillion. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos last week ordered her and the Goodluck Jonathan led administration to account for N30 trillion missing or unaccounted for while they were in government (read here). Okonjo-Iweala says she's not gotten any court order and that the report is politically motivated. Read her statement after the cut...

“Our attention has been drawn to media reports regarding a court judgment alleged to have been entered against the federal government of Nigeria and Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in respect of an action by the Socio-Economic Rights Agenda (SERAP) pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act. The high court, according to the media reports, ordered the Federal government and Dr. Okonjo-Iweala to provide information relating to N30 trillion Naira allegedly unaccounted for. Dr Okonjo-Iweala hastens to state that she was never served with any court processes in relation to the said matter. She has not read the judgment and would therefore defer any comments on the matter. However from the media reports, the case was instituted in February 2015 but was not served until July 2015 after Dr Okonjo-Iweala had already ceased to be the Minister of Finance. By the date the said papers were purportedly served Dr Okonjo-Iweala was no longer a public officer and could therefore not be the subject of a request for production of any documents or information under the Freedom of information Act. The court processes must have been served on others because the attention of Dr Okonjo-Iweala was never drawn to the matter in which she appears to have been sued personally. She therefore did not engage any lawyer to act for her in the matter. The decision of SERAP to anchor its case on a baseless and unsubstantiated allegation by former CBN governor Professor Charles Soludo that N30 trillion – about seven times the total annual budget during the Jonathan administration – is missing confirms SERAP’s dubious motives and its role as a tool for politically motivated actors. It is curious that the first time Dr Okonjo-Iweala is being made aware of a matter filed against her in court is in news reports reporting the delivery of judgment. She has instructed her lawyers to take steps to set aside the judgment as it affects her.‎”

Labour rejects N145 new petrol price

THE organised labour, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congres (TUC), on Wednesday, rejected the planned increase in petrol price, saying it will vehemently resist the increment.
This came as the Federal Government announced that a new maximum pump price of petrol of N145 per litre came into effect from Wednesday.
The decision to jack up the price from N86.50 was reached after a meeting of stakeholders, presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
Also in attendance at the meeting were the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Ibe Kachikwu;  leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives, leadership of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
At the end of the meeting, Kachikwu briefed State House corespondents, explaining the rationale behind the increase.
He said the meeting reviewed the current fuel scarcity and supply difficulties in the country and the exorbitant prices being paid by Nigerians for the product, with prices ranging on the average from N150 to N250 per litre currently.
According to him, the meeting also noted that the main reason for the current problem was the inability of importers of petroleum products to source foreign exchange at the official rate, due to the massive decline of foreign exchange earnings of the Federal Government.
As a result, he said, private marketers had been unable to meet their approximate 50 per cent portion of total national supply of petrol.
The minister said following a detailed presentation by himself, it became obvious that the only option and course of action now open to the government was to take certain decisions.
According to him, in order to increase and stabilise the supply of the product, any Nigerian entity is now free to import petrol, subject to existing quality specifications and other guidelines issued by regulatory agencies, adding that all oil marketers would be allowed to import petrol on the basis of forex procured from secondary sources.
He said the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) template would reflect this in the pricing of the product.
“We expect that this new policy will lead to improved supply and competition and eventually drive down pump prices, as we have experienced with diesel.
“In addition, this will also lead to increased product availability and encourage investments in refineries and other parts of the downstream sector,” Kachikwu said.
Confirming the new price, PPPRA, on Wednesday, officially announced the new price band for petrol at N145 per litre.
It also advised the NNPC retail stations on the outskirts of major cities to sell at price lower than N145 per litre.
Executive Secretary of the agency, Sotonye Iyoyo, in a press statement, a copy of which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja, on Wednesday, said the review became imperative in the face of extreme difficulties faced by petroleum product importers in sourcing foreign exchange.
Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday evening, however, both the NLC president, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, and the TUC president, Comrade Bobboi Kaigama, in separate interviews, said they had called the emergency meeting of their relevant organs to take a prompt decision on the issue.
In his response, Wabba said: “we reject it. We are going to convey emergency meeting of our National Executive Council (NEC). Look at the economic situation, workers and Nigerians cannot afford it.
“The workers have not been receiving their salaries regularly. We have not even resolved the issue of electricity tariff. Nigerians cannot afford foods on their table and now, we are talking about another increase in fuel price,” he said.
Also, the TUC president, Kaigama, said the Federal Government caught them unawares with the sudden increase, adding that labour rejected it in totality.
“They caught us unawares. We are going to summon emergency organs meeting of the TUC to address the matter. We will come out with our position. I believe and hope the NLC will hold same. We will then come together to make a force and present our position and plans to workers and Nigerians,” he said.
Comrade Joe Ajaero, factional president of NLC, told the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday that removing subsidy without fulfilling the agreement reached with the unions was betrayal.
“We shall be mobilising Nigerian workers and masses to resist this. Government must keep its promises to Nigerian people and end this increasing angst and deprivation in the country.
“We do not see in this budget any attempt to immediately boost local refining capacity either by ensuring a quick turn around maintenance (TAM) on the existing refineries or by establishing new refineries as promised during last year’s elections,” he said.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, had earlier said on Wednesday that the Federal Government was to engage the organised labour over the planned implementation of the deregulation policy in the downstream oil sector of the Nigerian economy.
Ngige, who spoke with  journalists at a strategic planning workshop organised by the Organisation of Trade Union of West Africa (OTUWA) in Abuja, assured Nigerians that implementation of the policy would not resort to labour crisis and unrest.
Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Mr Obafemi Olawore, however, supported the decision to remove subsidy, calling it the right step in liberating the downstream sector.
“It is a step towards deregulation. At MOMAN, we support full deregulation,” he said.

Increment insensitive to Nigerians' plight -Fayose
Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, condemned the increment of petrol price from N86.50 to N145, describing it as insensitive and demonstration of the level of hatred the Mohammadu Buhari-led government had for Nigerians.
The governor, who said the over 70 per cent increment was another vindication of his predictions on what to expect in 2016, added that it was now clear that the scarcity of petrol being experienced in the last three months was deliberately orchestrated by the Federal Government to pave way for the already conceived increment.
According to his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said “Nigerians are now left at the mercy of political liars who took over power by deception and are governing by deceit.”
He said he was waiting for the reaction of those who took to the streets to protest when fuel subsidy was removed by the Dr Goodluck Jonathan-led administration in 2012, urging labour unions in the country to stand by their members always, not minding the political party in government.
“When they were seeking for votes from Nigerians, they promised to reduce petrol pump price to from N87 to N45 per litre, they promised to create three million jobs per year, they said $1 will be equal to N1 and above all, they promised to pay unemployed youths N5,000 stipend and provide one meal a day to pupils nationwide.
“Instead of fulfilling their promises, they have increased petrol pump price to N145 per litre, increased electricity tariffs, retrenched thousands of workers and imposed untold hardships on Nigerians.
“As they did in 2012, if labour leaders do not also stand up for the people at this time, posterity will not forgive them,” he said.

Agoro expresses disgust
Also, former presidential candidate of National Action Council (NAC), Dr Olapade Agoro, expressed disgust at the decision of the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy and its attendant increase in the pump price of fuel.
He described the recent development as a defiance of the promised change of the Buhari-led administration, which had made lives of common masses more difficult.
Agoro bemoaned that state governments had also added to the misery of Nigerians by not paying salaries.
“It is unexpected for President Buhari, who promised change, to continue to make life difficult for the common masses. The rich may afford the increased pump price but this development is so bad for many Nigerians. State governments also add to the pain of Nigerians,” he said.

I don’t want Cameron’s apology, but return of stolen money- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he would not be demanding any apology from British Prime Minister, Mr. David Cameron over his diplomatic gaffe, describing Nigeria, along with

Cameron and Buhari
Afghanistan as ‘fantastically corrupt’. Cameron and Buhari President Buhari said instead, he would demand action from Cameron, by returning Nigeria’s stolen money and assets stashed in the United Kingdom. Buhari made his frustration clear as he addressed a Commonwealth conference in London Wednesday morning in the wake of Mr Cameron’s diplomatic gaffe. Clutching a glass as he made small talk with the Queen at a Buckingham Palace reception, the PM was caught on camera being indiscreet about the countries he had invited to a key anti-corruption summit tomorrow. The Presidency and several other Nigerians, have however, lashed back at the British PM for that scathing remark. This came as the Presidency, yesterday, expressed ‘shock’ at the unguarded comment, saying that Cameron must have been looking at an old snapshot of Nigeria. However, the president Wednesday morning refused to criticise Cameron directly when he was asked about the blunder at the conference. Instead he said he expected the UK to help him reclaim Nigerian assets that had been fraudulently stripped from the country. Buhari said: “I am not going to demand an apology from anybody. What I am demanding is a return of assets … This is what I am asking for. What would I do with an apology? I need something tangible.” Earlier, Commonwealth Secretary General Baroness Scotland said Mr Cameron’s remarks had been ‘unfortunate’ and countries like Nigeria needed support rather than criticism. Mr Cameron’s candid comments risked causing diplomatic ructions ahead of the major international anti-corruption summit in London on Thursday. As well as Buhari, and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is due to attend. He has also acknowledged corruption in his country and pledged to clean it up. The gathering of the world’s political and business leaders in London will aim to ‘galvanise a global response to tackle corruption’ and is being staged in the wake of the Panama Papers leak, which revealed widespread tax avoidance among the world’s elite earlier this year. Afghanistan is at number 166 in campaign group Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perceptions Index – second from bottom. Only North Korea and Somalia, jointly ranked at number 167, are perceived to be more corrupt. Nigeria is at number 136.

Militants blow up Chevron oil facility, vow more attacks

Militants in the Niger Delta yesterday blew up the Chevron Valve Platform located on the high sea near Escravos in Warri, Delta State in a renewed attack on oil installations in the country.

Militants in the Niger Delta yesterday blew up the Chevron Valve Platform located on the high sea near Escravos in Warri, Delta State in a renewed attack on oil installations in the country.
The attack is another setback to the nation’s oil and gas production sector, even as the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is still working to restore the Forcados export terminals after a similar attack two months ago.
Nigerian Navy spokesperson, Chris Ezekobe, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said the attack occurred about 40 nautical miles from the Escravos terminal, around the city of Warri.
Ezekobe said he was yet to know which militant group was responsible and there were no immediate details of any casualties.
The development may further reduce the nation’s oil and gas output. But Chevron is yet to confirm if production has been halted at Escravos and how much of the process is affected.
A source at Chevron who confirmed the attack said that the company is working on a public statement, which was not ready as at press time.
It was learnt that the facility was completely destroyed with the use of a dynamite.
The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), a new militant group, has claimed responsibility for the attack, warning that the deployment of soldiers in the region would not deter them from carrying out further attacks.
NDA threatened not to relent until it cripples the nation’s economy.
A statement by the group’s spokesman, Madoch Agbinibo, noted: “The high command of the Niger Delta Avengers wants to use this medium to thank Strike Team 6 for successfully blowing up the Chevron Valve Platform. And we are ready to protect the Niger Delta people.
“This is what we promised the Nigerian government. Since they refused to listen to us we are going to zero the economy of the country.
“As for zeroing the Nigerian economy, the Niger Delta Avengers is done with the Niger Delta major oil installations. Now, we are taking the fight out of the creeks of the Niger Delta. We are taking it to Abuja and Lagos now,” he said.
Agbinibo continued: “We want to pass this message to the all international oil companies operating in the Niger Delta that the Nigeria military cannot protect their facilities. They should talk to the Federal Government to meet our demands else more mishap will befall their installations.”
The group had earlier claimed responsibility for the attack on the Forcados 48-inch Export Pipeline two months ago.
An attack was launched early this year on Escravos Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) connected to Chevron Nigeria Limited’s gas network at Escravos. This negatively impacted gas supply to some critical power projects.
The Federal Ministry of Power said the attack cut off the supply of 160 million metres standard cubic feet per day (MMSCD) of gas to operators of electricity generation facilities and a cut in power supply from the affected power plants.
Meanwhile, indigenous companies operating within the Nigerian petroleum economy yesterday raised the alarm over the uncertainty surrounding the international crude oil prices which has led to the deferment of investment plans or outright cancellation of capital projects.
Their fear was based on the fact that the local content capabilities that have been built in the industry over the years may be in danger of being eroded if the companies do not survive the downturn.
This is further compounded by the expectations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which has projected that growth in Nigeria and other oil-exporting countries would decline to 2.2 per cent this year.
Operators stressed the need to reduce cost of operations and projects through local capacity development, indigenous working assets acquisitions, developing local expertise, low maintenance and reduction of operational costs of existing assets.
According to the operators at the content workshop with the theme “Local Content Implementation in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry: A Cost Reduction Strategy,” organised by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN), there should be cost-effective implementation of projects and utilisation of local resources to reduce overall cost.
They said there should be a policy direction to focus on sustainability of Nigerian local capacity to survive the declining crude oil prices.
At the event, Chairman of PETAN, Mazi Bank-Anthony Okoroafor, stressed the need for the industry to be placed on existing in-country capacity instead of patronage, adding that Nigeria should actively pursue reserves and production growth, which he said, has been on the decline.
Okoroafor stressed leveraging proven Nigerian companies and in-country capacity building, adding that proper implementation of the Nigerian oil and gas industry content development would significantly drive down the cost of doing business in the industry and cushion the effects of the low prices.
He stated: “The industry has operated under the Local Content Act regime for six years now and there is the need to take a closer look at the implementation strategy to ensure it is delivering the desired value to various industry stakeholders in particular and the Nigerian populace in general. Proper implementation of local content will lead to massive economic transformation of our great nation.”
Chairman, PETAN Conference Committee, Ranti Omole, stated that based on the belief of indigenous companies, the association is partnering to reduce cost of operations and projects in Nigeria through increased local patronage.
He said: “The industry has been undergoing challenges and facing turbulent period for the past two years due to low prices of crude oil and low demand. This has resulted in severe adverse consequences in the industry as well as on the economy of many oil-producing nations including our country.
“This has led major players in the industry to rationalise their operations, seek efficiencies and cost-saving measures to ensure profitability and survival of their businesses.”
Acting Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Daziba Obah, said with the right support and environment, indigenous companies were best positioned to provide services at lower cost without compromising standards.
Obah added that there was an opportunity to leverage the low value of the naira to source services, technology and solutions locally at much cheaper cost.
He noted that there would be much more cost-savings if operators develop increased project management capabilities, stressing: “Operators will save costs by optimising existing facilities and improving maintenance efficiencies.”
Dwelling on the role of the Federal Government to help save indigenous companies from the pangs of crude oil prices, former Chairman of PETAN, Emeka Ene, said that there was the need to develop the steel sector for local production of steel billets, coils and plate.
Ene added that government should accelerate gas infrastructure along gas corridors to ease the availability of gas in oil and gas parks, oil and gas free zones and other manufacturing locations supporting oil and gas activities.
“There is the need to engage relevant agencies in foster cordial and seamless working relationship with respect to expatriate quota and issuance of work permit.
“There should also be a periodic industry-wide capacity audit of local companies to establish current capacities and embark on gap closure interventions. Research and development clusters should be encouraged to promote the development of home-grown technology,” he said.
According to the IMF’s April 2016 regional outlook report, economic activities in sub-Saharan Africa have weakened markedly, with growth for the region as a whole, falling 3.5 percent in 2015, the lowest in 15 years.
Specifically, the IMF expects the economy to slow further in Angola, given, among other factors, limited foreign exchange supply and lower levels of public spending, and in Nigeria as the adverse impact of lower oil prices is compounded by disruptions to private sector activities through exchange rate restrictions.
The report stated: “In view of these trends, governments should consider a set of policy options tailoring the urgency of adjustment to the extent of domestic vulnerabilities.
“Commodity prices have fallen sharply and, for energy prices, at an unprecedented pace. Oil and other commodity exporters are adjusting, but given the extent of the shock they are facing, policies are currently ‘behind the curve.’ ’’

Commercial activities were brought to a stand still in Aba, the commercial home of Abia State today after some Igbo and Hausa boys engaged themselves in a free-for-all fight.

The clash which happened around 12pm caused serious tension in Ogbor Hill axis of the city as most business owners closed down their shops and fled.

The fight started after a Hausa butcher at Waterside market murdered an Igbo trader who cautioned him for urinating besides his shop.

In a quick reprisal move, some Igbo traders quickly descended on the Hausa butcher and lynched him.

All the Hausa people around the Aba abattoir at Waterside fled for safety after heavily armed military men reached the scene of the attack.

10 LINES ONLY NIGERIAN GUYS USE TO WOO GIRLS

Nigerians are very creative; they have the ability to create funny chat-up lines in a loving way. You will be surprised at how amusing they can get when they’re interested in someone and need to initiate a conversation. Some could be funny, creative, intriguing or downright annoying but at this point all they’re thinking about is how to create a common ground, approach a stranger without getting embarrassed or rejected. Here are the top ten Nigerian funniest chat-up lines that will make you laugh your heart out:

1. “You look familiar, have we met?”
This seems to be the most popular in Nigeria when it comes to chat-up lines. A guy walks up to you and is like “… Hey. .. You look familiar, have we met?”. ( And you’re staring blankly like …” No, I don’t think so” and he goes …”Oh common don’t tell me you can’t remember me. ..”. So in a bid to defend your memory, you oblige and chat or you really don’t care and tell the person off.
2. “Can I follow you home? ‘Cos my parents told me to always follow my dreams”

When you hear a line like this, you may be too weak to react cos you’re boiling within with laughter. All that runs through your mind could be “what the heck is he (or she as the case may be) thinking?”.

3. “Hey, you are very pretty, you look exactly like my mum”
This sounds awkward because the lady does not know how the person’s mom look. However, some women may feel honoured while some maybe like .. ” What? are you alright? You wish!”
4. “Ooooo Boi! I wish I met you first”
This line is pretty famous in the circles of those who meet someone they think they like when they’re already in a serious relationship. It’s a funny way to break the ice but it works. Sometimes, It has an uncanny feel to it that can soften the other person’s disposition towards you.
5. “You’re the only egg in my roll. Without you I’m just a buns”

Now talk about downright hilarious. Even the meanest or hardest Nigerian mind will break a smile on hearing this. The mere thought of the person trying to talk to you being a “buns” is so funny. Using this is sure to kick start your much needed chat but you’ve got to get creative to keep it going.
6. “I’m not a prophet but I can see you and I together”

When you hear such lines, the first thing that comes to mind will be “hmmmm, the brother’s getting all religious on me” and as funny as it may sound it, works for some people.

7. “I thought happiness starts with letter H, why does mine start with U?”

How creative and smooth, when you hear such lines you just smile because you get carried away by the mind behind those words. It’s funny but cute at the same time, words like this can break any ice cold heart and get a conversation going. Besides, give the brother some credit for the pun.

8. “Does it Hurt? (What?) Falling from heaven”.

I’ve heard men use this line a lot. Its just a sweet way to tell a lady that she is an angel. It’s kind of abstract because it starts with a question – Does it hurt? It’ll definitely trigger some curiosity in the mind of the lady because it’s awkward. And the later part – falling from heaven – creates the opposite reaction because they never saw it coming. It’s an old classic pick up line that still works.

9. “Hi I’m kind of lost. please can you help me find my way to …..?”

chat-up lines
I can bet you this line has been in use for decades and till date it works. It makes you sound vulnerable and in need of help but the aim is to draw attention and start a conversation. This kind of pick of line works better in public places

10. “Now I know why Solomon had 700 wives… He never met you!”

Talk about religious and funny, this is sure to earn you a smile from that ‘sister’ that’s got your nerves in a twist and your mind all tangled up. This type of lines that have a biblical feel to them are best tried on religious person with a sense of humour.
When it comes to chat-up or pick-up lines, you’ll hear a lot of things. However, in the mouth of the right person, a line that sounds so silly can be said in a way that will charm the other party and culminate in a lasting relationship – be it platonic or romantic. The thing is to adequately access the circumstances and environment under which you’re meeting as well as the person in question otherwise the only thing you maybe picking is a “dirty slap”.
What do you think? Have you got any funny chat-up lines you would like to share with us?
